Kicking Tribe 8 up a notch
The first thought I had was simultaneously increasing the amount of threat that the Z'bri pose and the capability of the Joanites to defend Vimary. Basically, the idea is to make an active "Cold War" between the Tribes and the Z'bri - which would fundamentally change the Pact of the Dome. It would also settle a slight incongruity in the setting regarding why the Tribes would completely back off from finishing the Z'bri off after the Liberation. So instead of a sudden and complete truce, the new history would have the Z'bri being actively pushed back into what is now the Hl'kar. Cornered by the combined might of the Tribes, the desperate Z'bri send out secret emissaries to the Fatimas and agree to a forced stalemate between them. This results in the the now familiar arrangements for the Z'bri to sacrifice the Baron if the Fatimas sacrifice Joshua (this part of the canon background still holds - with Joshua around, there's no way that a stalemate could have worked). To hold the Z'bri to their side of the bargain, the Fatimas commanded the Joanites to build the Seven Fingers at the edge of Hl'kar. These Seven Fingers are quite a bit different than the canon - they are bigger, better defended, better constructed, and actually imbued with Synthesis that both bolsters the power of the defenders and actively prevents Z'bri from crossing them. They're like a smaller version of The Wall from A Song of Ice and Fire.
The Pact of the Dome would exist to make sure that each group stays within their sandbox, with the consequences of breaking it a renewed all out war. The Joanites seldom if ever venture beyond the Seven Fingers, and the Z'bri can't cross into Tribal lands without assistance (more on this in a bit). I'd actually push Hl'kar fully back over the river past Laval and off the island. Abonom always struck me as being far too close to Tribal land, as did the Z'bri settlements shown north of Evan land on the south shore of the river. This creates a situation where it's believable that the Z'bri have somewhat fallen into the realm of bogeymen and the Tribes have no real inkling as to what threat they pose. I would then populate the island north of the Seven Fingers with Squat bands, which provide the Z'bri with a source of flesh. Those Squat bands are actually what pose a threat to the Tribes, as Z'bri raiding forces them to throw themselves at the Joanite defenders in desperation to escape. It also creates believable scenarios for Joanite scouts to move among the Squat tribes to determine if the Z'bri are holding up the Pact.
This new reality would need a few more tweaks to make it workable. I never really liked the idea of Jo'han Z'bri so close to the Tribes - particularly those in the Skyrealms. While I get that the upper reaches of Montreal's skyscrapers might be near inaccessible to the Tribes, that alone being a reason for the Tribes tolerating Z'bri living there doesn't jive with me. With better defenses (and the implied ability of the Tribes to ward areas against the Z'bri) that means the Jo'han would be absent from most places in Tribal lands. In their place, I'd actually place any Z'bri that a Tribal can come in contact with in Tribal lands underground. The Emporiums and the underground are where Tribal and Z'bri emissaries meet when needed; they're also where Z'bri that have escaped Hl'kar live. Known entrances in Tribal lands could be warded similar to the Seven Fingers but there's a lot of unknown entrances. Any large Z'bri assault on Tribal lands would come from underground as a result (at least until the Seven Fingers are torn down), and also provides the means for Squats from north of the Seven Fingers to get into Vimary undetected.
That's it for now...I'll have more when I get some more ideas on how I'd like to change the dynamics of the setting for the better.

Not sure what happened...
While not Tribe 8 related, there is a new MMORPG coming out called The Secret World that looks like it might be interesting. It's a supernatural conspiracy settings. Here's a trailer:
Also, over at the DP9 forums a poster found this website that has some very Tribe 8 looking images such as this:

The 12 Year Cycle
From the teachings of Ramsek, Yagan Mordred:
The third year of the Cycle is the Year of the Deer. This year is important among the Grand Council and the Tribal Elders. A large gathering is held this year by the Councils and the adolescents from all of the Tribes vie for the right to be chosen as trainees for positions within the Councils. It is a great honor to be selected and is a year that is rife with political intrigue and clan status. Of those born within this year, they often are seen to have very regal bearings and are sought after as icons of prestige.
The fourth year of the Cycle is the Year of the Eagle. Some consider this year a year of anarchy and questions, but we know that it is actually the acts of uncovering hidden things that has given it a notorious reputation. The power of the eagle's sight grants the Tribes foresight and guidance, allowing us to act wisely and with just cause. Joan's last crusade was in the Year of the Eagle. For those born within this year, they are considered to have a greater sense of honor, although they are often seen as loners and opportunists. The Watch and the Templars both compete for the right to choose a champion among an Eagle born warrior.
The fifth year of the Cycle is the Year of the Mouse. Favored by Agnes, the Year of the mouse is often a year that has a sense of fun to it. Nothing very serious ever happens during this year and people tend to take care of day to day business and live their lives with happiness and joy. Of course, there are often times during this year when large and important decisions need to be made, but, almost always, they are dealt with quickly and without much ado. For those born in the Year of the Mouse, they live very peaceful, joyous lives filled with wonder and merriment. They are often considered naive.
The sixth year of the Cycle is the Year of the Owl. The decisions of the previous Year of the Mouse are re-opened during the Year of the Owl and either ammended, discarded or left untouched. Surprisingly, most of the time things are left as they are. The Year of the Owl is also used as a time of exploration among the Tribes. Westholm was founded in this year and it is hoped that another far off settlement will be founded the next time the sixth year comes to pass. A person born with the Owl as a Patron Animal has a knack for making snap decisions and taking risks with little consequence. They are filled with luck and are seen as good friends.
The seventh year of the Cycle is the Year of the Snake. The Year of the Snake is a favored year of Dahlia and all of the other Tribes are on their guard during this year. Dahlia plays her greatest tricks this year and often the results are felt far and wide. The Year of the Snake is definitely a year of illusions. Those born this year are thought of as cads and swindlers, always looking for the fast break and a good time. Never jade a person born in this year. You may live to regret it for the rest of your life!
The eighth year of the Cycle is the Year of the Cat. This year is a holy year among Baba Yagans. The cat gives Yagans premonitions and spiritual guidance and is often used as a time for great rituals. Most other Tribes have a sense of fear when it comes to this year and many superstitions are practiced. The Year of the Cat is also the coinciding number with the lost Fatima, Joshua, as well as the Fallen who claim to be the Eighth Tribe. It is not a year that is favorably looked upon by the rest of the Tribes, especially Tera Sheba. Those born with the Cat as their Patron Animal are mysterious and secretive. They are seen as keepers of occult knowledge and rites. The first born, of each Tribe, are sacrificed on this year.
The ninth year of the Cycle is the Year of the Spider. Eva favors this year, as the spider is considered the perfect homemaker, hunter, and harvester. The spider is also extremely adept at creating offspring! The Year of the Spider often yields the greatest harvests and hunting is abundant. Being born in the year of the spider ensures your good graces as an important member of family and clan. Spider born Tribals are hard workers.
The tenth year of the Cycle is the Year of the Unicorn. Magdalen's presence is heavily felt this year and many traditions of courtship and love are practiced among all of the Tribes. This year is also very good for Dreamers, as the River of Dream is very powerful during most months. Magdalen poses that this is because of her, but that is an arguable point. Those with the Unicorn as their Patron Animal are pure and filled with virtuous qualities. At least that's what they will tell you! This is our current year.
The eleventh year of the Cycle is the Year of the Lion. The lion grants this year with an air of power although not much seems to get done! The decisions of the Year are written and recorded by the TeraShebans, and the Joanites hold many parades and ceremonies. Veteran warriors are inducted into the Old Guard and all of the Tribes honor their more senior members. Those born in the Year of the Lion are bold and honorable, although they can exhibit lazy qualities.
So now you understand how we divide the years and their importance. Now I will show you the manner in which we reckon the months.

I ain't abandoned this thing...
However, reading The Laundry has gotten me thinking...what if the coming of the Z'bri is CASE NIGHTMARE GREEN? If the Laundryverse is the World Before, it puts a much more Lovecraftian spin on the entire setting. Synthesis would just be computational sorcery, basically using Dho-Na curves. This means that the Tribes have conquered being able to do the computations in their heads without turning their brain into boiled cabbage. It's probably not a crossover I would pursue, but it is an interesting exercise.
Otherwise, everyone have a good New Year and see you on the other side!

Possible rules changes
But when I put the stress tracks in, I realized I have six distinct stress tracks. It made me kind of rethink things a bit to see if it can possibly be simplified.
I know I can subsume Spirit into Equilibrium. They're really almost the same thing, and having them be separate is really a holdover from Silhouette and not really something that is hardwired into the setting. It just means that Consequences need to reflect the source (i.e., Synthesis backlash vs. spirit combat).
Barter is the other one I'm looking at, and it's a sticky-wicket. Technically it represents the goods and services that the character has available to them - either directly on hand or because of things that are owed to them by others. Subsuming it into Social makes some amount of sense. The character's social relationships are going to directly impact the character's ability to get things. The problem is that Social can't reasonably cover what the character actually has, and currently Barter as a separate stress track does both things nicely. I'm very much tempted to leave that alone and just combine Equilibrium and Spirit.

Character creation example
For this example, I’m going to choose Max – an Agnite Herite that I played in a Tribe 8 PBEM many, many moons ago.
Define character concept
Max’s concept is an Agnite Herite who is convinced that Joshua was killed simply for being the only guy amongst a bunch of girls. He doesn’t hate women, only the matriarchal society that has grown up under the Fatimas. He’s seen men get the short end of the stick too many times in Tribal society, and deep down just wants everyone to be equal.
For this, I will give Max a defining aspect of A Man Living in a Woman’s World.
Choose Kin Package
Max’s Kin Package is Fallen and costs 2 AP. His Kin Aspect is Fallen Agnite Herite with a Specialty Aspect of Banished From the Tribes (Empathy). He has the Synthesis (Eminence only) advantage to start with the Eminences Inspiration and Freedom.
Choose Character Aspects
I’m going to use the Aspect ABCs to choose Max’s Aspects.
Ambition: Prove Why Joshua Was Murdered
Max is convinced that Joshua was murdered simply because he was male, and his goal is to prove his belief.
Background: Failed as a Breeder
Once Max reached puberty, he was unable to…perform…as a Breeder. He knows Agnes controls who can become Breeders and that she caused him to get thrown in with the Barrens. That event prompted him to lash out, kill another Agnite, and escape Playground.
Convictions: Everyone Should Be Equal, Boobs Or Not.
This one is easy…Max believes that everyone should be equal, and that the matriarchal society perpetuated by the Fatimas needs to be destroyed.
Disadvantages: Too Mouthy For My Own Good
Max just sometimes doesn’t know when to keep his mouth shut.
Choose Abiities
Max has 25 points to spend on abiltiies. He is a young (roughly 16 years old), fit and wiry – definitely not fullback material. He also isn’t full of a lot of social grace. Because of this, I’ll divide his abiltiies this way:
Physical
- Agility 3
- Endurance 3
- Perception 2
- Strength 2
Mental
- Craft 2
- Knowledge 2
- Reasoning 2
- Willpower 2
Social
- Deception 1
- Empathy 2
- Persuasion 2
- Resources 2
Choose Specialty Aspects
Exceptional Skill: Joshuan Lore (Knowledge)
Max’s drive to learn exactly why Joshua was killed has given him an indepth knowledge about the Fatima and His Tribe.
Foes: Troy Fenys Has It Out For Me (Persuasion)
Max’s conviction that the Fatimas need to be eliminated doesn’t extend to killing Tribals. This puts him at odds with more extremist Herites, particularly Troy Fenys who goes out of her way to target Max during rants. Other actions have jeopardized some of Max’s efforts.
Gear: Custom Keeper-Made Wrist Crossbow
Max’s Keeper friend Go’nan has crafted a custom wrist crossbow for him.
Help: Go’nan the Keeper
Max has formed a friendship with a Keeper that lives on Hom, who enjoys Max’s youthful enthusiasm.
Inferior Skill: “Girls…who understands them anyway?” (Persuasion)
Max has a knack for saying the wrong thing around girls, a problem that is made worse around pretty girls or girls he likes.
Choose Advantages
Max already has the Synthesis Power (Eminence only) from his Kin Package, but has 4 more AP to spend. He is not really the type to use Conjunctional Synthesis, and in some ways feels that doing so risks strengthening the Fatimas somehow so we’re not going to buy the power up. Max is lithe and very agile, as well as fearless, and his fighting style has a childlike quality (such as slipping between between an enemy’s legs). To represent this, he gets the advantages:
- Fearless (1 AP)
- Free Runner (1 AP)
- Slippery Combatant (2 AP)
Choose Starting Equipment
Besides his wrist crossbow, Max needs a few things. Go’nan is able to provide Max with some higher TL equipment, so this enables Max to get a unit of penetrator ammo. Next he needs some way to defend himself when things get too close and personal. A short sword looks good for this purpose. To keep him from getting too banged up, a set of patchwork leather and hide armor works well. These are rounded out by a pair of good quality relic goggles and a Joshuan talisman that he’s found.
A little bit of sad news…
So I was going through the backup I made of my old domain when I took it down, and I realized something important was missing. The databases. See, because I was using a content management system/blog, the actual content was stored in MySQL databases. I always figured that I would figure out some way of getting that the content, either by setting up an Apache server or figuring out a way to extract the data into a SQL Server database and recreate it myself (which sounds crazy, but for me would be easier than trying to get a web server up and running).
Apparently, the dbs weren’t backed up.
That means the entirety of my website – years of content for Tribe 8 and Jovian Chronicles – are gone. This includes the SilCore Wiki. For some reason, the Internet Archive has only one entry for the site and that contains no real content. I think it’s because I was using a CMS, which many crawlers won’t index because the URLs aren’t static. Fortunately, they do have entries for my original Tribe 8 site – luckily that was plain HTML. I should be able to get much of the Tribe 8 content back that way, or at least the content that I care about. Unless I luck out and stumble on the database files, however, the SilCore wiki is lost forever.
Oh well…live and learn I guess…
Just a little something to get us started…
This song always has, and always will, embody Tribe 8 for me. I’m going to try to post a video every couple of days as I find them. In the meantime, if you’ve never heard KMFDM or listened to this song…enjoy!
